Album of the Week – ‘The Twentieth’ by Daniel Hunter
‘The Twentieth’ by Daniel Hunter is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.
As they say…’First impressions count’, and this debut release is a work that will leave a lasting one. Hunter takes the opportunity of composing a new release to tell the story of his time abroad. Now settled in Paris, the Aussie expat amalgamates a European aesthetic with an Australian Jazz framework. Locally, Hunter quotes influences from outstanding artists including James Muller, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield and more. The artist shows a unique sensitivity throughout each track with regard to both their instrumentation and melodic composition. The album’s orientation, ‘Aaaaah’, presents a moody and fluid arrangement featuring a melodic dance between Hunter and Warren Walker on Tenor Saxophone, opening with both musicians playing in unison and then offering the floor to each respective player to showcase their own interpretations of the musical framework.
In contrast to this is it’s final track ‘Born in the Eighties’, a faster paced and bright composition with a pronounced rhythmic drive and favouring towards the souring improvisational work of Walker. This stylistic interchange is where Hunter finds the balance to round the work, giving audiences a chance to hear the eclectic range he is capable of composing and playing. Alongside Hunter on Guitar and Walker (The Kandinsky effect) on Tenor Saxophone, the album features Damien Varaillon (Nicolas Folmer Quartet) on Bass and Nicolas Charlier (Thomas Encho Trio) on Drums.
