Album of the Week – Players/Sounds by Bullhorn
‘Players/Sounds’ by Bullhorn is Eastside Radio’s album of the week.
This week we are going all out there with the choice of genres as our Album of the Week covers so many different styles with another home grown Australian band. This time it’s Brisbane-based Bull Horn and what a unique eclectic sound these guys have given us. An album that crosses from funk, soul, hip hop, jazz, reggae and dance music leaves us with a nice uplifting record that you just want to turn the volume up on.
‘Players/Sounds’ was released in September 2014 however it is not the first time we have heard from this Brisbane nine-piece band as they have been on the go since 2011 dropping singles every so often. Their debut self-titled album ‘Bull Horn’ was released only six months after the guys got together. Receiving quite a lot of air time nationally and getting booked into festivals around the country such as the Woodford Folk Fest, Noosa Jazz Fest, Island Vibe Fest, Caxton Street Fest, The Village Fest and many others, it was a given that it was onwards and upwards for these lads.
When a band is so unique it will always strive as we get to hear sounds and styles that rarely (if ever) have been heard before. They have taken what we know as seperate and jammed the whole lot together to make for some pretty interesting sounds. Hitting the studio with trumpets, trombones, saxophones and drums, these guys have gone an produced a record that brushes off a mixture of genres. Known for his crowd work, frontman and vocalist Roman MC, approaches each track with a slightly different tone, his reggae lyrics are something to be reckoned with. Also on the roster is Andrew Ball on Soprano/Alto/Tenor Sax, Simon Ward on Trumpet/Euphonium/French Horn, Nathan Drury on Trumpet/Flugal Horn, Brodie Macallister on Trombone & Mikael Strand on Trombone, Tom Stewart on Tenor/Bari/Bass Sax, Stevie B on Sousaphone and Joel Alexander on the Drums.
With such a combination of talents coming on board we get to hear the uplifting, fun vibe they want to express. Across 11-tracks we are brought on a whirlwind of sounds, from up-tempo dance to groovy reggae beats and beyond. If you’re looking for an album to start your day, the kind of record that will put a spring in your step, then this dynamic project from Bullhorn is it!
