Alice Humphries – Ecila
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Ecila by Alice Humphries.
Perth composer Alice Humphries is an exceptionally promising talent. In fact Mike Nock has gone as far to say that she’s set ‘to make a big contribution to Australian music in the future’ and it’s rare that the stalwart of Australian Jazz is proven wrong with his predictions.
Ecila is Alice’s debut album and was funded after a successful pozible campaign last year. Featuring her 11 piece ensemble (Also called Ecila), she’s arranged them in a refreshingly alternative style. The additions of a viola and cello add a classical element to the equation and whilst the music is richly textured, it is also not egocentric, with an overall natural sound that is full of expression and life.
Ecila sways between classically inspired jazz, experimentation and jazz/folk interpretations. A definite highlight are vocals from Allira Wilson, another new and promising performer who’s heart warming style on ‘Don’t Explain’ and ‘Bury Me Beneath The Willow’ are truly captivating.
Ecila is a deeply thought provoking experience offering both moments of incredible intensity and sublime serenity. It’s a beautiful and highly impressive first release as Alice’s forward-thinking and different arrangements are brought to life by a highly talented young group of musicians
Ecila is an independent release by Alice Humphries. For more information go to alicehumphries.com.au
