Ancient Greek artefacts at the National Museum

Panathenaic amphora

The National Museum of Australia in Canberra is currently showing an exhibition of over 170 artefacts from the British Museum until 1 May.

NMA- Greeks – Nike gazing at her reflection

Curator Dr Lily Withycombe talks us through the exhibition entitled Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes that includes amphoras, statues, jewellery and armour. It explores competition through sport, politics, drama, music and warfare.

The exhibition includes interactive elements such as soundscapes, tactile displays as well as smells and large scale projections of some of the tiny objects.

NMA- Greeks – Solar disc and pendant earrings – Nike earring

Dr. Withycombe has divided the exhibition into 6 categories – Nike Goddess of Victory, Sporting Competitions, the Performing Arts, War, Heroes and Myths.

There are many events surrounding the exhibition covering school holiday programs and a Greek Agora or recreated marketplace on Feb 12.

Also we continue our preview of the podcast series How Much Do You Know? that looks at HIV/Aids in 2021. In Ep. 4 we meet Nick Cook author of Fighting For Our Lives that explores the history of gay activism from 1980-1990.
