And The Islands…

And the islands slid up the side of the plane  —

Deb Mansfield is a Sydney-based, photo-media artist whose research has predominantly focused on littoral geographies: the place where land meets sea. An important part of her research has been travelling to specific littoral regions like Louisiana, Tasmania, Newfoundland and South Africa.

Deb has completed several artist residencies both locally and abroad, and been the recipient of several awards and public art commissions, exhibiting consistently since 2000. She currently lectures in photo-media at The University of Technology, Sydney and the College of Fine Arts — University of New South Wales.

Deb’s series The Armchair Traveller responds to the ritual of imagining remote coastlines while living in a busy metropolis. The work attempts to bring together a domestic/island symbiosis by using the backyard to stage constructs and by creating ‘islands’ out of everyday objects.

Her photo-tapestries originate from low-resolution digital images, scanned from negatives and then machine-woven. This process brings together multiple forms: the negative, the digital image, textiles and the machine.

These works are an accumulation of several years of research, supported by two artist residencies: a summer residency in Launceston and a winter residency in Newfoundland.
