Andrew Robson Trio – Songbook
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Songbook by The Andrew Robson Trio.
Sydney-based saxophonist/composer Andrew Robson celebrates twenty years with his trio by releasing this new limited edition album Songbook. Featuring drummer Hamish Stuart and bassist Steve Elphick, Andrew this time around has also enlisted the talents of trombonist/trumpeter James Greening and saxophonist Sandy Evans. Robson cites these two additions in particular as big inspirations of his, and together he and his team have created an album of class jazz music, characterised primarily by Andrew’s 1930’s baritone saxophone.
There is a slight shift in style on Songbook compared to some of Andrew’s earlier work. Where previous releases of his have been composed in suites, Songbook sees Andrew shift his style and focus on separate songs. It was this attention to individual detail that has given the album its name. Each track has its own flavour and story, and the album quite simply acts as a book for them all.
Totally composed of original instrumental songs, the trio seem to be losing none of their flow and finesse that they have become accustomed for over twenty years. Indeed Songbook sees one of Sydney’s finest Jazz trios continue to dazzle and wow us.
Songbook is a release on Andrew Robson’s Lamplight Records. For more information go to andrewrobsontrio.com
