Gilberto Gil

VIRAMUNDO
: A Journey with GILBERTO GIL
Australian premiere. Follow iconic Brazilian singer, guitarist and songwriter Gilberto Gil as he undertakes a musical journey across the globe: from Bahia in Brazil and townships in Soweto and Johannesburg, to indigenous communities in Sydney and Yirrkala in Northern Australia. As one of the key figures in Brazil’s tropicália movement and with an enduring music career, Gil has spent many years touring the globe. Here however, the former Minister of Culture goes on a different kind of tour exploring issues of racism and identity and how music and creativity can help promote a new, culuturally diverse world vision. Director Pierre-Yves Borgeaud documents the trip, which includes Gil meeting Peter Garret in Australia, mixing concert footage from South Africa and the Amazonian island of Isla de Flores, with Gil’s conversations along the way and ultimately his his hopes and doubts, for future generations.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

BROTHERS HYPNOTIC
: The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
Australian Premiere. The eight sons of anti-establishment Sun-Ra trumpeter Phil Cohran are the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble: a tight crew of amazingly talented musicians from Chicago’s South Side, brought up on their father’s steadfast ideals to remain fiercely independent artists at all costs. The film unfolds as the brothers are on the rise, gigging with the likes of Mos Def and Prince, taking the international festival circuit by storm and recording with Damon Albarn’s label Honest Jon’s. As success beckons, they find themselves at a crossroads – will they remain street performers and self-distributors of their work, or choose to let go of their inherited principles and find their own, new way forward? (RC – Antenna). This beautiful film also offers views into Phillip Cohran’s past and is directed by Reuben Atlas.

Kathleen Hanna

THE PUNK SINGER
: Kathleen Hanna

Sydney Premiere. Leader of the punk band Bikini Kill and electronic dance trio Le Tigre, Kathleen Hanna was one of the most outspoken feminist icons of our generation. But in 2005, Hanna stopped shouting and mysteriously disappeared from the music scene. Twenty years of video archive and personal recordings take us on a compelling tour through Kathleen’s love affair with music and activism to the event that changed her life irrevocably. Filmmaker Sini Anderson illuminates an intimate and fascinating picture of a fearless woman whose strength and conviction continues to inspire today. Russian group Pussy Riot no doubt picked up their first microphone thanks to the path forged by Kathleen.
