Arts Friday 3rd April: Memory

Songs in the Key of Black, Literature of the Iranian Diaspora, masks, paintings and layered memories are all a part of today’s episode of Arts Friday, 10.30am – 12pm, presented by Maren Smith.

We’ll be joined today by four guests, loosely assembled around themes of memory, history and place.

My first guest is performer Lucy Maunder, one of Australia’s leading ladies of musical theatre, who is bringing her acclaimed cabaret tribute to on of America’s greatest songwriters, ‘Irving Berlin: Songs in the Key of Black’, to the Hayes Theatre opening this Tuesday. It’s been said of Berlin, ‘Irving Berlin has no place in American music, Irving Berlin is American music.’ We’ll also hear two of Lucy’s tracks from the album.

After 11am, Sanaz Fotouhi, writer and filmmaker, will be coming in to discuss her recently published book ‘The Literature of the Iranian Diaspora: Meaning and Identity Since the Islamic Revolution’. A first of its kind, the book traces the history of an emerging body of Iranian literature in English, weaving personal and creative stories into the analyses of the unique perspectives of these writers.

Our final guests today are Blue Mountains based artist Nicole Toms and director of MILS gallery Adriano Rosselli. We’ll hear about Nicole’s second solo exhibition at MILS, CMYB, featuring evocative paintings and masks made from layered paper, wax and resin. The works are memory “onion skins, filters, lenses, trapdoors, tunnels” tranformed into the tangible.

Tune in from 10.30am – 12pm this morning, Friday 3rd April for Arts Friday, presented by Maren Smith.
