Join me, Jane Raffan, for a program that takes an in-depth look at the exhibition City of Shadows currently on show at the Justice and Police Museum, Circular Quay.
I’ll be chatting with curator Nerida Campbell from Sydney Living Museums (formerly Historic Houses Trust) about the exhibition, which is back in town by popular demand after a 6 years hiatus.
The exhibition’s curator Peter Doyle – yes, the crime novelist! – described it as ‘an intimate, raw and hauntingly beautiful record of the mysterious people and dark places of a Sydney lost’.
Focusing on the victims, perpetrators and vicinities of crime, the original City of shadows introduced the world to the museum’s extraordinary and compelling collection of police forensic photography dating from 1912 to 1948.
Since 2008, Sydney Living Museum curators have been investigating leads and following up tips from the public and new research has solved many of the mysteries surrounding the people and places in these compelling photographs.

And the music? In keeping with the tenor of the show I’ll be playing murder ballads (incl. one by Rachael Dease), film noir scores and jazz that evokes the period and evinces underworld moodiness.
