Trevor Nickolls, ‘Metamorphosis’, winner, 2013 Blake Prize

ArtiFacts Eastside.

Join me, Jane Raffan, for a program that takes an in-depth look at the Blake Prize. Established by the Blake Society, the Prize challenges artists and poets to investigate ideas and issues surrounding spiritual thought and religion in contemporary society.

I’ll be chatting with the Reverend Dr Rod Pattendon, current chairman and longtime member of the Blake Society about the society and the various prizes awarded: the Blake Prize for art, for Poetry, and for Human Justice.

More on the Society and the Blake Prizes here: https://www.blakeprize.com/

And the music? In keeping with the tenor of the show and the Prize’s outward thinking, the playlist will be an eclectic mix of instrumentals and vocals influenced by gospel, traditional spirituals and with a few twists. Twisted perhaps? Well, let’s face it, there’s always more than one side to any story (the idea of god wouldn’t have had nearly the same impact without the idea of the devil…).

So, if you like modern blues and jazz interpretations of traditional spirituals, and/or the spirited music of Tom Waits, Jello Biafra & Mojo Nixon, Etta James, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee, Chris Smither, David Murray, Charlie Haden & Hank Jones, then you are in for a treat.

As always, I look forward to your company, 10:30 to noon.

Jane
