ArtiFacts, Eastside.

Join me, Jane Raffan, for a program devoted to communities and neighbourhoods around the world.

I’ll be interviewing Louise Hawson, the photographer and blogger behind the 52 Suburbs Around the World exhibition at the Museum of Sydney.

In 2010, Louise Hawson woke up one day and realised she was a stranger in her own city. And then she set herself a mission:  to explore and photograph one new Sydney suburb a week for a whole year. After a successful show at the Museum of Sydney in 2011, Louise took her challenge overseas.

At the heart of the blog and the exhibition is the portrayal of ‘beauty in the burbs’ captured through Louise’s photography, which celebrates the vibrancy, multiculturalism and communities of neighbourhoods around the world in famous cities only known to most of us through postcard icons.

Louise’s photographs depict people, objects, images and words in combinations that reverberate in ways to create a vibrant sense of place. And they are beautiful.

And the soon-to-be-published book will be available here from late September: https://52suburbs.com/

The program’s music will concentrate on jazz played in, and about, some of the cities Louise explored on her journey, which include New York and Paris, so there will be a host of greats in the line-up.

As always, I look forward to your company, 10:30 to noon.

Jane
