Arts Monday 30 July 2012

ArtiFacts Eastside.

Join me, Jane Raffan, for a program that looks at the virtual museum Objects Through Time, which reveals fascinating aspects of Australia’s history through the interpretation of hundreds of objects drawn from collections across the country and overseas.

I’ll be chatting with Curator Stephen Thomson about the museum, which is a product of the NSW Migration Heritage Centre and the Powerhouse Museum, and we’ll be focusing on a handful of the objects in the exhibition as a basis for discussions about various pathways through Australia’s history.

The museum can be accessed here: https://www.migrationheritage.nsw.gov.au/exhibition/objectsthroughtime-history/about-objects-through-time/

And the Powerhouse has published a book on 100 of these special objects: https://www.powerhousemuseum.com/publications/publications_item.php?id=261

And the music? Migration and travel, including escape, is the theme of the day. Contemporary Australia is a country built on migration, from convicts to free settlers, and sponsored immigrants to refugees. The musics for today’s show is almost as diverse: a touch of jazz and blues, some reggae and world music, and a few contemporary vocal pieces with lyrics that resonate with the theme of today’s show, and focus on ideas bout leaving/flying away and starting again.

Glad to be back with you after a hiatus on other projects. As always, I look forward to your company, 10:30 to noon.

Jane
