Arts Monday – See You at the Barricades
Join me, Jane Raffan, for a program that takes an in-depth look at the exhibition ‘See You at the Barricades’, currently on show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
I’ll be chatting with Macushla Robinson, Assistant Curator of Contemporary International Art about this exhibition, which explores the nexus between protest art and art-as-critique, and the emergence of a ‘dissident aesthetic’ in contemporary art.
The exhibition asks us to consider whether “contemporary art remains in itself a form of dissent, or whether it’s become a form of nostalgia that valorises the past.”

And the music? We’ll be listening to protest music from as early as Billie Holiday’s1939 “Strange Fruit”, through to 1960s civil rights protests, as well as songs protesting land rights action and a dose of anti-war and anti-imperialist mantras as well. Dylan will be in the mix, of course!
As always, I look forward to your company, 10:30 to noon.
Jane
