Arts Thursday, on 21 April gives air to both the visual arts and to sound-based performance art.

First up is composer, broadcaster and writer Julian Day who joins me, Maisy Stapleton in the studio to talk about Super Critical Mass which is showcased in the exhibition CUSP, now making its return to Sydney to the Australian Design Centre.

CUSP is an exhibition, or a vehicle, for demonstrating the ideas of designers working across a broad landscape of innovation and ideas and indicating how design can influence lifestyle, learning and our lives in general.

Super Critical Mass is co-directed by Julian Day, Luke Jaaniste and (formerly) Janet McKay, who have been developing soundscapes through community participation, which can alter the way we think about and hear performance at the same time as building interaction and participation.

The second guest is Guy Warren, a 95 year old painter, who left school at the age of 14 to become an artist and has painted and drawn all his life – even during active service in New Guinea during World War two.

Listen in to a great conversation with him at the SH Ervin Gallery, where an exhibition of his work, curated by Barry Pearce, Emeritus Curator of Australian Art, AGNSW, is being presented until 29 May.

The exhibition focuses on paintings and works on paper from Guy Warren’s earliest days in London during the 1950s and the 60s works, soon after his return to Sydney, together with recent works. Both old and new works explore his lifelong interest in our relationship to the landscape.

The exhibition, Genesis of a Painter: Guy Warren at 95 is being shown at the SH Ervin Gallery on Observatory Hill
