ARTS WEDNESDAY

Arts Wednesday 6 July 2022

In the first half hour, Sue Jowell returns with Part 2 of The Musical – More Than Entertainment. In this episode, Sue turns her attention to the Backstage Musical – those musicals that revolve around a performance: think 42nd Street, Cabaret, Gypsy and so many more.

My special guest at 11:00 am is Adam Courtenay, making a welcome return to Arts Wednesday. His latest book is called Three Sheets to the Wind and tells the remarkable story of the voyage in 1796 of the Sydney Cove from Calcutta to Sydney, carrying 7000 gallons of best Bengali rum to the dissolute colony of NSW, under the corrupt regime of the NSW corps and the truly awful John  McArthur. Only 3 of the original crew make it to Sydney, but what a journey!

Music is mostly from backstage musicals, with a couple of convict songs to punctuate the conversation with Adam.

I look forward to your company!
