Aunty Hu Hu & The Big Lazy – A Pawn For A King
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is A Pawn For A King by Aunty Hu Hu & The Big Lazy.
Describing themselves as “a bunch of misfitting pants created to divert life from the roads well worn”, Hu Hu and her three lazy companions do anything but make you want to spend the day in your sleepwear. Hu Hu’s sassy and at times accusatory vocals on this magnificent debut are spell-binding, oozing both power and mischief through her direct yet often satirical lyrics. Combine this raw energy with the sultry blues undertone created by keys man Big Jim Lazy, bassist Subbo Lazy and Louey Lazy on drums and you wont be able to stop yourself singing along and having a boogie.
Hu Hu and her clan’s debut contains a sound that is minimalistic yet effective. With a fairly subtle instrumental backing, Hu Hu’s vocals are a focal point shown strongly in songs like Howlin’ At The Moon, Take Me Down and The Bucket Song. But then groovy guitars and insatiable drum beats come into effect, notable on songs like No More Wine and I Don’t Believe.
