Australian Poetry – Dorothea Mackellar

Eastside’s Arts Dr Margaux Dombkins presents Episode Two in our series on ‘Australian Poets – Old & New’ in conversation with author and poet, Libby Hathorn. Our second episode features Dorothea Mackellar (1885 – 1968) who is best known for her poem My Country.

Hear Dorothea herself reciting ‘My Country’ written when she was a homesick nineteen year-old on holiday in England and which she originally titled ‘Core of my Heart’. Dorothea Mackellar’s poems read and discussed include: ‘Colour’, ‘The Dreamer’, ‘Dawn’, and ‘In a Southern Garden’.

Dorothea Mackellar’s verse is now regarded by many Australians as the universal statement of our Nation’s connection to the land.
