Bandaluzia Flamenco at Venue 505

For just two nights in September, as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival, the extraordinary Bandaluzia Flamenco will bring their unique music and dance combination to Sydney.

The acclaimed flamenco ensemble returns to Venue 505, featuring as special guests the incredibly talented Johnny Tedesco (flamenco dance) from Melbourne’s ARTE KANELA and 2011 freedman fellowship winner Ben Hauptmann (guitar). The ensemble is led by Damian Wright (flamenco guitar) and features Jessica Statham (dance), Steve Hunter (bass), and James Hauptmann (percussion).

For these special nights, virtuosic musical performance will be integrated with the passion and fire of spectacular Flamenco dance.

“Bandaluzia is winning high praise for its unique Australian interpretation of the powerful music and dance form….with their thrilling blend of passion and virtuosity”. Sydney Morning Herald

Come and experience this powerful Spanish art form, with the added flavour of Australia. Jessica lived in Madrid for five years, studying intensively at the renowned Amor de Dios academy. She has brought home the skills she learned in this dance style, which has both amazing history and a thrilling, immediate presence on stage. Damian spent 4 years studying with some of Spain’s most recognised maestros of the Flamenco guitar, before returning to Australia to lead his own ensemble.

The result is a blend of the authority and drama of traditional Flamenco with the rich harmonies and explosive improvisations of Jazz. The group is also noted for it’s ability to incorporate within this the exotic melodies of the Orient and the infectious rhythms of South America, creating the kind of unpredictable melange for which Australian musicians are so admired.
