Ben Panucci Trio – Short Stories
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Short Stories by the Ben Panucci Trio.
“Guitarist and composer Ben Panucci is a key figure in a surprise contemporary movement of young musicians who go backwards, forwards and sideways throughout the Jazz tradition.”
– Yum Yum Records
With bassist Alex Boneham and drummer James Waples by his side, Jazz disciple Ben Panucci has created 9 tracks that visit every corner of the genre and encompass a selection of elements from others. Short Stories is a beautifully crafted collection of instrumental tracks featuring skilled guitar plucking, a subtle yet zesty bass line and a well paced drum beat.
Each track on this record has it’s own life span and contrasts so vividly to it’s neighbour. Such as the second track on the album but anyway it isn’t the game, which holds a roller coaster like composition of melodies and breakdowns that propel you into reverie. Another standout track Party on the Event Horizon acts as the fifth track and the truest of jazz numbers. The rhythm of the guitar bounces in a rapid pulse that can only ensure your head is nodding and your toes are tapping. A Dance is a slow mover that can only be appreciated by a slow dance around the room and the closing track for the album Get Well ties up every loose end in one fantastic drum smashing eruption.
A remarkable album that was entirely composed by Ben Panucci himself, this collection is subtle yet bold, erratic yet so ultimately jazz and our feature album here, at Eastside Radio 89.7.
