Bluesfest sideshows bring the best of the ‘fest to Sydney

Shuggie OtisSome of the biggest names from Bluesfest in Byron Bay will be coming to Sydney over the next few weeks – Wanda Jackson, the Ultimate Blues Revue, the Gospel Celebration, Playing For Change and Bettye Lavette, plus many, many more.

Wanda Jackson, aka the Queen of Rockabilly, has been around for long time. In fact she’s working on her thirty-first studio album. She’ll be playing at the Factory Theatre on Saturday March 23 at 7 pm, and with her on this Australian tour is Eezra Lee and his big band. (See more here…)

Over at the Enmore Theatre on the same night, March 23, Robert Cray will hit the stage with the Taj Mahal Trio and Shuggie Otis (pictured left). Their show is aptly named the Ultimate Blues Revue, and with several Grammys between them, places in the Blues Hall of Fame and more, these guys really are the ultimate blues artists. (See more here…)

All-woman a capella ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock, will appear at the Enmore Theatre on April 1 at 8 pm. They’ve appeared at the White House and won countless awards for their unforgettable soul sound. Sweet Honey is part of the Gospel Celebration which also features the inimitable Blind Boys of Alabama, Allen Toussaint and the incredible Mavis Staples. (See more here…)

The amazing World Music group, Playing for Change (pictured below), made up of some of the world’s foremost street performers, will play at two venues in Sydney: Thursday March 28 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, and Monday April 1 at the Factory Theatre at 8 pm. Genevieve Chadwick and Blue King Brown will even join in the show. (See more here…)

Playing for change

Another uniquely talented and much anticipated act coming our way is the singer’s singer, debated as the finest soul vocalist of all time: Bettye LaVette. She’ll be at the Factory Theatre on April 5 at 7pm. After decades in the industry, Bettye’s just written her autobiography, A Woman Like Me, and she’s got a new album out called Thankful n’ Thoughtful. (See more here…)
