Book Launch: Resurrection

Local author Pat McDermott will be launching her new book at Paddington institution Ariel Booksellers next Thursday, and all are welcome.

Pat McDermott was raised in the 50s and 60s, in bushland surrounding the Georges River in Sydney. She came to the city to go to university, and after a career that took her far and wide, returned here in 2002.

She has spent the last four years researching and writing a book to find a way to come to terms with the suicide of her younger brother, and perhaps share a perspective that might help others.

Pat writes, “I needed to make sense of my younger brother’s death by suicide. The process of writing helped me to understand how I had not only survived the ordeal, but how I had learnt to grieve and yet live and love.”

Resurrection is published by Jane Curry Publishing, and Pat is looking forward to this chance to get people talking about this important and neglected issue. “Male identity can be a fragile thing at times of crisis and there may be no visible safety net, especially for young men living alone in rural areas. If enough of us educate ourselves on the symptoms of male suicidal behaviour through suicide awareness training, then the safety net may become more visible.”
