Broken Stopwatch: a show by Rully Zakaria

RZ_exhib_flyer_v1

Its Friday afternoon in Five Dock and Fela Kuti can be heard blaring out of the garage as Rully Zakaria hastily finishes the last details on a major artwork. Living in affordable suburbia with his wife and one year old daughter, he’s been planning Broken Stopwatch since being accepted by Marrickville Council to exhibit in Chrissie Cotter Gallery, Camperdown this May.

In 2001, Rully and a collective of local artists took over a derelict warehouse in Chippendale and founded Space 3 Gallery, one of the few free artistrun spaces. Their five year legacy lives on in the underground arts scene today and this adds to the build up of the upcoming exhibition, Broken Stopwatch.

It’s Rully’s first solo exhibition in seven years and he’s a little nervous about stepping back into the scene.

I was younger then and less responsible. My art was my life and after the success of Space 3 Gallery and a few sold out solo shows, I thought I could dedicate a career in painting. Now its more about the journey, about having an experience through the art.”

Broken Stopwatch is an exhibition about the modern man made world. It observes the current state of the human race and the relationship we have developed with machines, the digital era and yesterday’s technology. It’s a harmonious friction of human instincts and our reliance on machines that fabricate our urban infrastructure.

The anticipation builds as the word gets out about Broken Stopwatch, Rully Zakaria’s comeback show.

All works will be for sale. Eastside Radio 89.7FM presents DJs on the night and Woolpack Hotel, Redfern will offer a selection of wine and beer.

Indonesian born Rully Zakaria is a Sydney based artist, designer and illustrator. He has exhibited throughout Sydney, Melbourne, Indonesia and Beijing. He cofounded Space3 Gallery, Chippendale (2001 2005) and Gallery FourtyFour, Darlinghurst (20062008). He currently works as a graphic designer from his studio in Surry Hills, pursuing projects in music, arts and was part of the awardwinning team who created large scale projections for Vivid Sydney 2012 & 2013. He also cohosts a weekly music show on Eastside Radio 89.7FM.
