Charles Bradley: Soul of America

Directed by Poull BrienSoul Of America tells the remarkable – and sometimes tragic – story of Daptone soul-singer Charles Bradley, whose debut album rocketed him from a hard life in the Brooklyn Housing Projects to Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 50 albums list of 2011. After years of obscurity fronting a  James Brown covers band, Bradley is now considered one of the world’s finest soul-funk artists, with a growing cannon of original songs and an enviable live reputation. Alongside reigning soul queen Sharon Shones, who also features in this moving cinematic portrait, Bradley found acclaim late in life but shows no signs of slowing down.

Albums like Victim Of Love and No Time For Dreaming are favourites of many presenters at Eastside Radio, so with Charles Bradley’s return to Australia to play Blues Fest as well as the Enmore Theatre in April, it got us thinking that Sydneysiders deserved another opportunity to see this film on the big screen with a good sound system (the way the makers intended), especially given it has only ever screened once before in this city. After premiering at the prestigious SXSW Festival in Texas two years back, Charles Bradley: Soul Of America has gone on to screen at numerous festivals around the world.
