Corroboree Sydney
Set in the heart of Australia’s biggest city against a backdrop of magnificent Sydney Harbour, a new cultural festival, Corroboree Sydney will launch this month in a celebration of the country’s rich Indigenous culture.
Bringing together nine of Sydney’s leading cultural organisations under the one banner for the first time, including the Australian Museum, Art Gallery of NSW, State Library, Museum of Contemporary Art and Bangarra Dance Theatre, the festival is a showcase of the best contemporary and traditional visual and performing arts.

Justice & Police Museum: Penguin Plays Rough at City of Shadows
To begin with, five writers will present scenarios and suspect profiles based on original crime scene photography from 1920s Sydney.
In the final event, artists from We Do Not Unhappen will bring together the scenarios and play out the crime scenes in various media throughout the museum.
Food will be available to purchase on the night along with drinks from the Young Henry’s Bar.
Five Suspects – Friday 22 November 2013
Building on the five separate scenarios devised at Five Scenes, five writers will give voice to five mug shots-come-suspects selected from the City of Shadows exhibition.
These pictures will also be made available a month in advance, so audience members can write their own one page character references for any of the suspects, which they are welcome to read on the night.
Again, there will be lists, opinions on suspects, and other ephemera for members of the audience to create on the night if they like, which will become part of the final event.
The audience will not need to have attended Five Scenes in order to follow the pieces.
Five Crimes – Friday 17 January 2014
In the final event, devised by We Do Not Unhappen, the five scenarios from Five Scenes and the five suspects from Five Crimes will be played out in various media throughout the museum for audiences to investigate.
Audience members will have the option to be passive onlookers or actively participate in sharing their thoughts on the crimes being committed over the course of the evening.
This event will draw the series to a close with the final audience determining which scenario/suspect combination is most likely to have taken place.

Public launch of Place Projections, Born in Darkness before Dawn 2013 by Nicole Foreshew
Join Lord Mayor Clover Moore for the first public projection of Wiradjuri woman Nicole Foreshew’s Born in Darkness Before Dawn, 2013 as part of the City of Sydney’s Eora Journey – ‘the people’s journey’.
The Eora Journey: Recognition in the Public Domain celebrates the culture of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community with art in our public spaces and includes the commission of seven public art projects as part of City Art, the City of Sydney’s public art program.
Nicole Foreshew’s artwork Born in Darkness Before Dawn, 2013 for Place Projections is the second artwork in this series.
Images of Aboriginal women draped in cloth will be projected onto the 20-metre façade of the Australian Museum translating concepts of place, tracing personal histories and connections to various communities in New South Wales.
Viewed from Cook & Phillip Park on the corner of William and College Streets, Sydney, the projection will be officially turned on at dusk. Join the Lord Mayor, the artist Nicole Foreshew and Eora Journey Curatorial Advisor Hetti Perkins for this special event.

The Cake Man
Back in the early 1970s a group of pioneering Indigenous theatremakers occupied a dilapidated terrace in Redfern and started the National Black Theatre. The first full-length play they staged was Robert J. Merritt’s The Cake Man. A droll examination of white paternalism from a black point of view, Merritt’s play kicked off a renaissance of art and performance that laid the foundations of contemporary Indigenous theatre.
The Cake Man is at once straightforward and complex. It is about the small details of life in a changing world. Jumping effortlessly from a pre-invasion idyll to the hard scrabble of modern life on a mission in western New South Wales, Merritt’s virtuosic play pings with closely observed portraits of people doing what they have to do to get by. Tucked away inside it is an account of the roots of despair and of the beautiful means of overcoming it.
Kyle J. Morrison is from the new generation of Black theatre. He is the Artistic Director of Perth’s Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company. We are teaming up with this great little powerhouse of new and old Indigenous stories to give this forgotten gem its overdue revival.
Robert J. Merritt watched his first opening night under police guard: he was an inmate of Long Bay at the time. The Cake Man is his real testimony.

Genesis Fashion Event
Genesis is Australia’s premium fashion event showcasing top emerging designers. Registration is now open to see this seasons talented labels.
The star studded event includes former Miss Universe Australia, Laura Dundovic who will be hosting the VIP night and Australia’s Next Top Model Judge, Didier Cohen.
Each hand-picked designer will present their unique collection on the runway whilst interacting with guests and buyers through their intimate designer booths.
Sydney based fashion entrepreneurs Marvin Osifo and Eti Amegor established Face Fashion in 2007. Their aim was to provide a platform for fresh emerging labels to introduce themselves to the competitive Australian fashion industry.

BVAD Graduating Exhibition 2013
The BVAD exhibition is an original collection of artworks from emerging artists. The exhibition showcases the creative concepts of students majoring in a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design (BVAD), at the Australian Catholic University.
The artworks present new attitudes toward a range of Art and Design industries, in media including painting, drawing, printmaking, graphic design, photography and sculpture.

The Painted Bach
To close the 2013 ‘Bach in the Dark’ concert series, cellist and artistic director, Rachel Scott is holding a special event.
Rachel will play Bach’s Fifth Suite for solo cello and the visual artist Judith White will paint a visual response on large canvases. This should be a wonderful evening, and something a little bit different!
A complementary glass of Simon Whitlam wine or non-alcoholic beverage is available to all patrons.

Jazz at the Pines Concert Series
Jazz at The Pines brings together great jazz bands to perform live on the lawns of The Pines at Dural – just 35 minutes from Sydney central business district.
Jazz at The Pines runs once a month in the warmer months of the year. Enjoy live Jazz underneath the shade of the 100 year old pines against the backdrop of historic Roughley House, built in 1856.
A limited number of chairs and tables are available for those who arrive early or bring your own folding chairs/blanket. Bring your picnic lunch and drinks or enjoy fabulous home-made afternoon teas from the volunteers in the Visitors Centre.
