Wendy Sharpe - Circus
“The recent revival in Contemporary Circus is no longer about animals, nor does it rely on technology. It is about people and skill. It’s live, precarious and anything can happen. Over the last couple of years I have visited many different contemporary circuses in Australia, France and Berlin. This exhibition comes from a combination of observation and imagination.”

Wendy Sharpe is an avid artist and has been lucky enough to sit in on and watch circus acts first hand (humans only), and says she is inspired by the energy, live music, opulent interiors, satire and incredible artistry of the performers during her artist residencies with both Circus Oz in Melbourne and Sydney and also Cirque d’Hiver in Paris. Wendy was also lucky enough to even have some circus performers pose, in full costume in her home in Sydney for her artworks.

Sally Simpson: Objects for an Unknown Future Museum
Simpson’s intention is to represent the present for an unknown future museum. She creates objects that belong to a continuous cross-cultural tradition of humans attempting to influence and manage the forces that affect the world around them.
Simpson has collected ocean debris for many years from the South Coast of NSW and Kangaroo Island in South Australia. Her work considers human relationships with the ocean through her use of rope, coral and fish bones she has collected.Simpson creates objects that belong to a continuous cross-cultural tradition.Humans have and continue to attempt to influence and manage the forces that affect the world around them.

Set in a remote mountain cabin, “Red Cross” dissects the infectious nature of personal fears: Carol is terrified her head might explode; Jim is convinced he is plagued by lice draining his life; and the maid is scared of drowning. Together they push the boundaries of communication and shared experience in this surreal dream play.

The Women

Inspired by salacious gossip overheard in powder rooms of swank 1930s nightclubs, The Women is a sharp-witted appraisal of Manhattan’s elite.
Written by American author, congresswoman, and devoted wife, Clare Boothe Luce, this comedy of manners is a tongue-in-cheek dissection of the city’s indolent ladies of wealth and leisure. Debuting on Broadway in 1936, the play tells the story of the pampered lives and power struggles of seemingly shallow socialites, as well as of the gossip that propels and damages their relationships. Boothe Luce suggests that, in every shopgirl or manicurist lurks a prospective home wrecker, and that no friendship is impervious to malicious rumours. We follow a muddle of poised yet spiteful Upper East Siders living in a realm of privilege utterly removed from the humdrum banality of the daily grind.
It is important to note that this play is heavily rooted in the social constructs of 1930s New York high society. While The Women is often cited as a feminist work – potentially due to the diverse achievements of Boothe Luce in traditionally male-dominated spheres – the text should instead be regarded as a glimpse into the lives of an elite few within an oppressed majority.

Winning Sky Photos exhibition
Winning Sky Photos is the exhibition of the top entries from the David Malin Awards astrophotography competition, held annually by the Central West Astronomical Society and open to amateur astronomers and photographers from around Australia.
The photographs are judged by world-renowned astrophotographer Dr David Malin. The competition aims to encourage photographers to use their vision, imagination and skill to produce inspiring and beautiful images of the sky.

Ian Kingsford-Smith: Lineage
The exhibition consists of a male adult astride a chair with his three babies positioned at his feet. The adult male stares into the void, his distant gaze demonstrates his psychological detachment from his offspring.
Kingsford-Smith has painted a complex range of narratives upon the ready-made figures, which represent life narratives, historic myths associated with procreation, the cycle of life, ancestor worship, archetypal experiences (love, despair, faith, etc) and more personal levels of experience. In this exhibition Kingsford-Smith explores the complex reasons why people choose to bear children and challenges the assumption that the perpetuation of genetic bloodlines is the most meaningful form of human connection and lineage possibLE.
This strategy emphasises the role of historical narrative in determining our understanding of the family unit, lineage and which members of society we view as valuable. Hovering in the background of the work is the cultural spectre of the history of advocating or deterring procreation for the sake of the nation state.
