The old Darlinghurst gaol is one of Australia’s oldest and best preserved examples of colonial sandstone architecture, which over the last 2 centuries has transformed from a place of abject misery to one of Australia’s premier arts institutes.

According to legend, the building is haunted by the restless ghosts of some of the 76 people who were executed at the gaol’s gallows.

Join us for a lively historical tour, shedding light on the fascinating history of the site and exposing the dark, hidden corners which aren’t usually open for public access. Scroll down to choose a date and book tickets.

Led by an expert historical guide, the tour takes approximately one hour and includes the historic Cell Block Theatre, the Chapel, the old Governor’s residence, the morgue, the flogging wall, the tunnel which was used to process and delouse prisoners and the site of the former gallows.

After the tour, guests will have an opportunity to enjoy the site including the Two Emus bistro/bar and NAS Gallery.

The summer edition of the City of Sydney’s biannual Living Colour display is now underway for 8 weeks – featuring more than 100,000 plants.

The designs have been inspired by fashion trends for Summer, Living Colour Summer 2020 will be a floral representation of the catwalk in a stunning visual display.

Patchwork is one of fashion’s latest trends, overlaid to Living Colour it will allow for an eclectic mix of colours, textures and heights. Summer’s colour palette walks off the runway and on to Sydney’s streets, colours of the season are a range of bright and fruity primary colours, supported by pretty pinks and purples, warm oranges and an array of greens. This varied palette allows for a beautiful collection of floral and foliage species.

Plants used will include Begonias, Ornamental Chilli, Parsley, Petunias, Salvia, Sunpatiens, Sunflowers and Vincas.

Installations can be found at Alfred Street, Castlereagh Street, Cathedral Square, Green Square Library, Queens Square, Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, Springfield Gardens, Kings Cross, Martin Place, Taylor Square, Union Square, QVB and Town Hall.

We are delighted to announce that we will be presenting a new body of work by David Griggs in February 2020.

David Griggs has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and South East Asia, including notable exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney; Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne; Blacktown Arts Centre, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; Artspace Sydney; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney and Manilla Contemporary, Philippines.

This includes “New York Paris London Rome Manila City Jail”, at Green Papaya Art Projects in Manila as part of a cooperation with Asia Link and the Australian Embassy (2009). Griggs also presented a major survey exhibition “Between Nature and Sin”, which is toured Australia until late 2019.

Griggs has been selected as finalist in the 2007, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Archibald Prizes. In 2018 David Griggs was announced as the Artspace Sydney artist in residence. In 2003, Griggs was awarded the Freedman Foundation Traveling Scholarship for Emerging Artists, the Willoughby City Art Prize in 2001; and in 1997 the Sir William Dobell Art Scholarship.

Griggs’ work is held in major museum collections in Australia as well as important corporate and private collections internationally, including the Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney; University of Queensland and the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney; Tamworth Regional Gallery, Tamworth; Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, NSW; The Powerhouse Museum, Sydney and the Joyce Nissan Collection, Melbourne.

Celebrating the colourful collision of creativity and culture across our communities, the world renowned Mardi Gras Parade unites hundreds of thousands of revellers for the biggest night on the LGBTQI+ calendar.

The iconic procession down Oxford St is sure to dazzle and delight as 200 mesmerising groups and floats roll past, inviting everyone into a world of all things camp, queer, glitz and glamour. Parade remains a vehicle of protest, honouring those who have marched the street over the last 4 decades, continuing to showcase What Matters to LGBTQI+ lives around the globe now, and taking us into the future.

Crowds line the streets for hours in anticipation of the Parade, which is open for all to enjoy - so make your way to Oxford Street or Flinders Street early to get the best viewing place and experience this creative playground under the stars.
