GIANTS - Isabel Avendano Hazbun
GIANTS is a feminist exploration of dress and adornment.
This exhibition challenges our social order that, still in 2019, often places women second to men and points out misogynistic behaviours that reinforce this order. GIANTS suggests dress as a universal, non-verbal and accessible language that can be used as a tool to subvert gender conditioning.
Just as large and powerful giants possess extraordinary powers, dress can communicate endless meaning. It allows the wearer to establish identity. It is an extension of self, a second-skin and provides physical and emotional protection. Dress can have powerful healing effects when we use it to modify our bodies. It is also an indicator of collective consciousness and a marker for change in our mass mental outlook.
The diversity of these hand-made wearables and sculptures relates to the multiplicity and complexity of womankind and are made from an assortment of readily available materials such as fibre, wire, recycled tyre inner tubes, yoga-mats and timber.
As a metaphor for breaking senseless social norms and shifting people’s mindsets these pieces were made using processes of destruction and reassembly. Bright colours and exaggerated proportions emphasise the significance of inhabiting space unapologetically in a social power structure that often demands meekness and compliance.
Through the personal and social meaning imbued in these hand-made objects, GIANTS suggests that social action and change can be achieved through simple means; from the simple act of dress, of putting something on the body.

Sydney Ideas: Living longer - why, and how?
Interventions that delay ageing could help prevent multiple diseases
Ageing is the main cause of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Given this exorable link, can we extend our lifespan without risking our health and quality of life?
The older we grow, the more susceptible we are to illness. Is there anything that can be done to delay ageing? And does living healthier mean living longer? Our esteemed panel of speakers will explore interventions that impact the ageing process.
Hear from the University of Sydney’s Professor Luigi Fontana, who offers insights into the role of diet in contributing to healthy longevity. Professor Brian Kennedy brings pharmaceuticals into perspective, and considers how they can help to delay ageing. Dr Felipe Sierra from the United States-based National Institute on Aging will focus on geroscience – what is it and why does it matter? How can understanding the biology of ageing help us to address chronic diseases?
Professor Victoria Cogger will chair this event. She’ll add her insights into how understanding the biology of ageing is helping us develop innovative therapies to prevent age-related disease.

Falling for fake content can lead to financial rip-offs, wrong choices with our health, relationships, jobs and more.
Learn strategies to differentiate online fake news and misinformation from real and trustworthy content and how to fact check content that you think might be dodgy.
This will be a collaborative, investigative and fun session with opportunities to discuss and share your own experiences.

As a leading international expert on family and digital lifestyles, Joanne offers fresh perspectives and solutions on our digital lives. Appearing regularly on TV and radio, she also provides expert parenting advice around all things technology.
Joanne is known for introducing new terms like ‘sharenting,’ the implications of parents sharing images of their kids online, and ‘Finsta,’ fake Instagram accounts.
She’s currently working on her third parenting book and hosts online and face-to-face digital-parenting seminars and courses.

Pound Paws Dog Day
We're celebrating National Dog Day with a paw-some party!
We’re teaming up with Pound Paws to celebrate National Dog Day and its 4th year hosting Double Bay Dog Day with a party our place!
The event will be held in our dog-friendly beer garden with 15+ pet market stalls that will spread out into Kiaora Laneway ranging from; professional fur-tographers, doggie massages, treat tastings, puppy crystal healing, free VET HQ vet checks and much more!
With dogs available for adoption from a variety of dog rescue groups around NSW – there will be plenty of opportunities to find a fur-ever friend.
To complete the paw-some day, there will be live entertainment, ranging from live acoustic music, a Rescue Dog Adoption Parade, educational vet chats, doggie beer and dog competitions with amazing prizes.
Red carpet arrivals commence at 12pm, with pup-arazzi! So come down to The Golden Sheaf and cheers with us to a barkin’ good time!
