The Architects Registration Board of NSW announces the theme of this year’s Sydney Architecture Festival: What makes a building truly great?

Tim Horton, NSW architects registrar and director of the Sydney Architecture Festival, says, “2018 is a supernova for milestones in Australian architecture. With major anniversaries for the Sydney Opera House and Australia’s Parliament House coinciding with plans for their future, the 12th Sydney Architecture Festival looks at our opportunity to preserve, protect and renew the enduring legacy of these modern monuments for future generations.”

The festival presents a program of talks, tours and exhibits and is bookended by the Architecture symposium on Friday 28 September and World Architecture Day on Monday 1 October.

Days of Note is a series of workshops and events designed to give Australians the tools and knowledge to upskill or turn an idea or project into reality.

In partnership with General Assembly, Samsung is giving Australians access to a selection of complimentary, short courses designed to help unleash their side hustle, ideas or passion projects.

The workshops will feature over 60 individual points of interest across a month-long program, which has been designed to empower people with the information, resources, and space they need to transform their ideas into reality.

The program’s bespoke workshops will run twice daily in a Samsung designed space within the WeWork in Sydney’s Pyrmont. The sessions will cover ‘Success in the digital age’, ‘Design thinking 101’, ‘From problem to prototype’, ‘How to win at UX’, ‘Content marketing workout’, and ‘Introduction to coding’. These classes will also be available online. Registration for courses is open now.

Participants will be invited to 3 keynote speaker and panel events hosted by leading entrepreneurs like Ronnie Kahn, Founder & CEO at OzHarvest, and Adam Jacobs, Co-founder and Managing Director of The Iconic, as they cover how to launch a side hustle, productivity hacks and tips for scaling, and growing a business.

In this exhibition of birds against paper and in ancient libraries, the artist uses the images of flooding books as a metaphor for knowledge in the digital age as well as hinting at the issues of climate change that threaten historical objects.

For James it is more aesthetic. He says “formally the organic curve of the heron’s neck and body is a wonderful juxtaposition to the grid of the books”.

How did his passion for books and libraries begin? He recounts “in an age dominated by ebooks and digital information I felt is important to find the origin of text, the book and the library. In 2010 I was granted special access to the Strahov monastic library in Prague. Centuries old, the books in the collection are hand bound in leather and preserved by rubbing layers of chalk and lime. The effect is the one of shelves of bone white cracked parchment which looks like ghost like apparitions of their origin.”

He writes “after spending days on my own, I felt by a transient being amongst fixed knowledge that was almost palpable.”

Perhaps James McGrath’s message is simple, we must all get back loving books and libraries again. That simple, that hard.

Digging deeper into the beauty of the body, mind and soul than any other exhibition of its kind, Real Bodies invites visitors to discover the elegance, complexity, and mystery of their own bodies as they examine the unbelievable anatomical systems that comprise human life.

Beyond the fascinating realities of the human physical form, the exhibition also presents the historical, cultural, and emotional context of the human body. The collection inspires a sense of wonder and awe at the ways in which all humans experience their time on this earth.
