Sculpture by the Sea - 23rd annual exhibition
Sculpture by the Sea returns to the Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach coastal walk as the world’s largest free to the public sculpture exhibition. See the spectacular coastal walk transformed into a 2km long sculpture park over three weeks featuring 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world.
To help you get organised for your visit please see our information for visitors and local residents. We’ve got tips on getting to the exhibition as well as some great local places to eat and stay.
There are many ways to add to your experience when you visit Sculpture by the Sea. Pick up a catalogue to find out about the artists ($12 from our helpful volunteers at the information marquees) drop into a free weekend Aqualand Artist Talk, check out our suggested Walking Routes for people with varying degrees of mobility.
For schools we offer a free online Education Program and our heavily subsidised education program on the coastal walk including sculpture making workshops and focus tours.
For people with disabilities we offer free Tactile Tours. Bookings essential.

Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival
This is the 9th annual Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, featuring 100 leading artists at venues across Sydney.

Momentum
Urban Theatre Projects returns to Barangaroo with Momentum – a new deep listening experience presented in Blak Box.
Curated by Daniel Browning (Bundjalung/Kullilli/South Sea Islander), this sound work examines the impact of representations of First Nations peoples in global popular culture.
Momentum pivots on the central idea that the past has not passed using the 1983 music video for David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ as a starting point.
Momentum is well suited to people who are blind or vision impaired. It is a listening experience where the audience can experience music, spoken word and song from First Nations artists.

City Dialogue
For more than 4 decades the Biennale of Sydney, Australia’s leading exhibition of contemporary international art, has engaged with Sydney’s public spaces in ways that are unexpected, fun and sometimes provocative.
The title of this exhibition takes its name from that of the 1979 Biennale of Sydney, ‘European Dialogue’. Now considered a watershed exhibition, it was the first in the world to present current work by Australia’s First Nations artists on a shared platform with contemporary Western art.
Dialogues between diverse cultures have ensued in Biennale exhibitions over the 4 decades since. Parallel to that conversation, an ongoing dialogue continues to unfold between Biennale exhibitions and the city of Sydney itself.
This archival exhibition reveals how artists from all over the world have reimagined Sydney, responding to landmarks, previously hidden sites and little-known histories by offering new insights and alternative ways of experiencing our city.

Tim Silver: The Distance Between Us
One of Asia-Pacific’s leading contemporary art galleries, Sullivan+Strumpf is pleased to announce ‘The Distance Between Us’ – a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary Sydney artist Tim Silver, opening at its Sydney gallery on 26 October – 16 November 2019.
‘The Distance Between Us’, 2019, presents a series of new figurative sculptures that draw on the relationships between people, objects, spaces and time, and explore the connections between our past and present, through the process of casting.
The sculptural works, created using glass, bronze, copper, steel and ash, are presented in pairs, which is suggestive of the narratives and connections that lie between the two figures and the times and spaces they occupy.
‘The Distance Between Us’ delves deeper into Silver’s exploration of time and decay. The artist furthers his contemplation of mortality with a series of sculptures that draw on the ancient tradition of casing to express the beauty and fragility of human life.
These contemporary artefacts reflect the histories of casting and the preservation and decay of corpses, referencing events such as the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii under a thick carpet of volcanic ash and the Andean tradition of honouring the dead in the time of the Inca Empire.
Silver considers the speculative narratives that emerge following the discovery of preserved bodies, questioning how the past is understood in the present. As past bodies continue to be strewn in throughout our present, a constant relationship exists between the past and present.
