David Moore: Capturing the Creation of the Sydney Opera House

Since opening in 1973, the Opera House has entertained audience in excess of 65 million. This year the Sydney Opera House will celebrate four decades as an eminent national building, as well as a valuable piece of cultural and tourism infrastructure.

David Moore (1927 – 2003) was Australia’s most renowned and widely travelled photojournalist. His extraordinary archive covers both his homeland and the many countries and subjects he visited over a sixty-year career.

From 1962 – 1979 Moore photographed the construction of the Opera House. His Opera House series taken from his extraordinary archival body of work will be shown at Customs House to commemorate the development of this iconic building, as well as Moore’s photographic legacy.

The installation has two parts, an exterior feature exhibit on the square from 19 – 27 October and a photographic installation on Level 2 from November 1st 2013 to January 26th 2014.

In Conversation: Tiny Stadiums

Join Groundwork, the curators of Erskineville’s Tiny Stadiums Festival, in conversation with festival artists, discussing their experiences of working with local communities and the processes of creating site-responsive work.

Tiny Stadiums is a unique festival that involves the local community, and commissions emerging artists to create works throughout the public spaces of this inner west suburb. Tiny Stadiums is produced by PACT centre for emerging artists. This project is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, ArtsNSW, City of Sydney and local businesses.

Walking the Landscape

Walking the Landscape features recent paintings by Graham Austin, Kerwayne Berry, Peter Griffen and Toni McDowell.
Four artists who are influenced by their experience of walking and working in the Australian landscape.

– Graham Austin’s (OAM) aerial views of his travels in the outback, influenced by his early memories of flight in a small plane.
– Kerwayne Berry’s reworking of intimately observed elements of her experience of the rocks and landscape of desert and water.
– Peter Griffen’s abstract paintings, alive with the often harsh colours of outback Australia interpreted in signs and symbols influenced by his association with Australian Indigenous art.
– Toni McDowell’s subtle rendering of Australia’s ever-changing light making for subtly abstract, yet grounded, observations of the Australian Bush.

Day One by Marina Antoniou

This collection of jewels draws on intrigue from the archaeological sites of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece for inspiration.

Like those recovered from Egyptian graves, small disc ostrich shell beads that were shaped, drilled and strung together by ancient craftsman have been seamlessly intertwined by Marina into this collection.

Turquoise was a highly coveted gemstone believed by the Egyptians to have supernatural powers. It features throughout Day One in a series of delicate yellow gold and silver rings. Striking red and soft peach hues of naturally sourced coral, hand cut sapphires and tourmalines have also been used by Marina to embody the colours of carnelian, red jasper and inlaid glass applied by these early artisans.

The lavishly ornate designs referencing elements of nature were frequent in the works of the Ancient Greeks and also feature as a source of inspiration. Leaf, olive and fruit motifs found in the gold wreathes of this period are a recurring presence in this collection.

Rather than replicating specific artifacts, Day One transcends the ages and blurs the boundaries of traditional jewellery design. It not only presents a reflection of the past – the beginning – but more importantly presents a reflection of the early development of Marina’s skills as a designer and maker.

Chinatown Night Market

The Chinatown Night Market is a multi-cultural community market that has been very popular with the City locals and is now rapidly becoming a point of attraction in Sydney under the auspices of the City of Sydney Council, CNM Management Team and its many volunteers. The Market not only revitalises the local businesses of Chinatown, but have also created an awareness of the vibrant community so large among Sydneysiders’ that it is now attracting more and more visiting tourists to Chinatown from afar.

The market implements an open plan outlook, which is visually pleasing and encourages an outdoor, leisurely atmosphere that complements the Mall and local shops; a large majority of which are restaurants with alfresco dining area.

Newtown Festival is Sydney’s flagship event that celebrates and promotes vibrancy, creativity, sustainability and an active community. Each year 80,000 people unite at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, to picnic and enjoy 8 hours of amazingly diverse entertainment for as little as a gold coin donation at the festival gates.

Presented by The Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Newtown Festival is the principal fundraiser for the Centre’s vitally important community programs. All monies raised by the Festival are returned to the Centre to provide support services to the local community.
