Coranderrk

Coranderrk is about what might have been.

In the neglected storehouse of Australian history, this is one of the definitive stories. At a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881, the men and women of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board. Their goal was both simple and revolutionary: to be allowed to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered for themselves on the scrap of country left to them.

Coranderrk recreates the Inquiry. This is both great theatre and great history. It revives the voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better compact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants – three dozen of them from 132 years ago, speaking for themselves, directly to us, as though the question at hand remains unanswered today.

This special co-production between Belvoir and ILBIJERRI pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite the odds, appropriating the power of the written word to make their own voices ring loud and clear.

Sydney Sings Choir

Sydney Sings was the very first of the With One Voice choirs to start in NSW…and is more like singing at a party than going to a traditional choir rehearsal.
We are fortunate enough to now have over 100 eager, friendly Sydney singers who endeavour to attend our rehearsal every Tuesday night.
So it is easy to come along and join in the crowd, regardless of what experience you have had as a singer.
Sing out, sing soft, hum along, it is all welcome.
We sing everything from 60’s folk music to Broadway (we even take requests!), and although we sometimes sing in harmony, and give great professional tips (from our conductors), the emphasis is on having total fun.
We are an extremely diverse group from CEO’s to refugees and migrants. We share stories and come together to sing With One Voice!
Everyone is welcome here, to this rich and unique environment, especially those who “don’t”, “can’t” or were told, “not to sing”!

So as reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, “get out of the shower and come and have some fun at Sydney Sings!”
You can join at any time. Bring your friends! Just turn up!

Free supper provided afterwards by Oz Harvest.

My Food History – Adam Liaw

Adam Liaw is a TV host, cook and author. He is probably best known as the winner of Masterchef Australia in 2010. His victory was the most watched non-sporting event in Australian television history.

Adam was born in Penang, Malaysia, and moved to South Australia at young age. He has a mixed cultural heritage: His father is Hainanese Chinese from Malaysia and his mother is Singaporean-born with English, French and Indonesian background. Adam has lived and worked around the world in countries, including China, Australia, Malaysia, India and, most recently, Japan, where he spent seven years as a media lawyer in Tokyo.

The My Food History talk series invites some of Australia’s best loved chefs to explore their families’ cookbooks, share recipes passed down through generations, and discuss how their ancestry inspires what and how they cook today.

Buffalo – Revisited

For four decades Buffalo have laid dormant, and to this day  are considered as Australia’s forerunners of Doom metal and Stoner Rock. With one of the bands originals and greats of Oz Rock, Pete Wells, no longer with us, fellow Buffalo co-founder Dave Tice (The Count Bishops / The Headhunters) has brought ‘together’ an All Star line up of players to revisit the classig songs from the Buffalo catalogue.

Revisited features drums by Paul Wheeler (Ice House/Choir Boys/Kevin Borich), thunder god of bass, Harry Brus (Australian Crawl/Renee Gayer/Borich x Borich) and indie metal man Peter Ross (Age of Menace) wielding the guitar with vocals by original co-founder Dave Tice.

Make no mistake, this line-up is in full metal jacket, and has risen to the stage to unleash Buffalo.
