Community Billboard 9th to the 15th of November

If you are looking for somewhere to take the family around the Eastern Suburbs this weekend then an event that has it all is the South Coogee Public School Fiesta, and everyone is welcome.

For the first time at the Fiesta there will be a paper plane race, so if you think you are a master at folding planes now is your time to shine.

The fun day out will be full of entertainment, activities, shopping, food galore and much more. There will be lots of activities for the younger ones to get up to from exciting rides, a petting zoo, face painting, cookie decorating, plaster painting, live performances and arts and crafts.

While the little legs are off taking part in all the activities you can take a look at some of the lovely market stalls showcasing handmade candles, handmade jewellery, plants, pre-loved books, crafts, homewares, fashion and more.

There will be lots of food options available on the day such as a Mexican, BBQ and lots more tasty treats, plus there will be raffles, prizes and competitions throughout the day. A perfect way to spend the day at a local community Fiesta.

Another great fun day out for all the family is happening not far from the city centre as the Glebe Street Fair will be on for its 32nd year, bringing you a kilometre long centre of bustling fun, filled with stalls, fabulous international food, kids' rides, entertainment and activities.

The Glebe Street Fair was first held in its current form in 1984, making it one of Sydney 's longest running annual events, attracting more than 100,000 people every November to Glebe's artistic and fun side of town.
There will be anything from tribal jewellery and accessories stalls, a charity for staffie dogs, to Jamaican sauce stalls and handmade Thai pants stalls. There will be over 250 stalls packed with a variety of handmade produce and unique findings on offer.

The entertainment will also be full to the brim with talent as acts such as Ngaiire, Polographia, Richard in your Mind, The New Venusians and a DJ set by Dr Motte will be bringing the sounds throughout the day. The Loco project shipping container/art gallery (which you can read more about in last weeks community billboard) will be there showcasing live works from local artists.

Over in Foley Park there will be story telling by local personalities, performances by local musicians and best yet, Jazz On The Green courtesy of the Sydney Improvised Music Association.
A 1 kilometre fair full of happy atmosphere with buskers, stalls and family's in the heart of town.

Heading to the beach on a Sunday might be the norm for you, however next Sunday there is even more of a reason to pop down to one of the lovely beaches in the Eastern Suburbs as on Coogee beach there will be a unique, fun and certainly worthwhile event taking place during Coogee's Seaside Scavenge.

Seaside Scavenge is a beach clean up but not just your ordinary grab a bag and pick up as much rubbish as you can, kind of clean up, at this event the rubbish you pick up is worth something, you trade the rubbish you collect for some funky second hand clothing, listen to some live music as you do it, and help plant a seed for change.

At this fun twist to a clean up for every ten pieces of rubbish you pick up you will receive a token. With this token you can trade for goods like t-shirts, jewellery, books, jeans, clothes mostly. They are priced in either 1, 2 or 3 tokens. All pieces of rubbish are valued equally because every little bit counts, doing this while some of Sydney’s finest musicians are putting on a show by the beach.

The event is all about unearthing your passions and turning that hobby into a career, Helping you find what you love doing through simple every day activities, whether they may be writing, acting, craft, painting, filmmaking, cooking, designing, doodling, art, photography etc, the aim is to help you find what you love and how to work with that.
Teaching the workshop will be Joy Hopwood who was a former presenter of A.B.C.’s Play School, a writer, blogger, teacher, lecturer and public speaker. She was an ambassador for Mission Australia and Cancer Council NSW and was nominated twice for the Australian of the Year awards.

With Joy bringing all of her experience she will help you think about your soul and passions, showing you how to begin writing, drawing, photographing your experiences through journaling and handouts will be given out to help develop your creative passions and with a list of different inspirational avenues to help turn your passions into a career.

Next week, Indira Naidoo presents a talk about community gardens. A couple of months ago an event similar to this was included here on Eastside Radio's Community Billboard, if you liked the sounds of it but couldn't make it don't worry as its on again.

Indira Naidoo who is a TV presenter, gardener and writer who has written best sellers, is on a mission to convert wasted urban land into productive spaces to grow food. On her trips all over the country trying to fulfil this mission Indira gives talks on how you can turn whatever little space you have into your own vegetable patch, instead of going to the farmers market you are the farmer, right from your suburban balcony.

During the presentation Indira will tell you all you need to know about how to build your own community garden including choosing a location, seeking permission to use it and how, plus when and what to plant. She also shares vital ‘how- to’ information on seed saving and composting, while giving you all the tips on how you can grow your own sustainable and edible garden

With the Melbourne Cup just over something that is spotted in every picture from the races is hats. Yes hats or head pieces, they are a traditional fashion addition that will never go out of style. If you like your hats and want to learn how you can personalise and perfect your next hat for the races, a wedding or any sunny day then pop along to Neil Grigg - Summer Hats.

At this class you will be shown how a milliner shapes straw and how you can adapt and revamp your hat by decorating and reconditioning.
Neil Grigg who will be teaching the workshop has had a 30-year career, making thousands of hats for brides, race-goers and celebrities alike from his studio and shop in Paddington.

He has created head wear for theatre productions such as Miss Saigon, 42nd Street, Glimpses and Les Miserables so you will be sure to have your hat looking just the way you want it to be.

An event that lights up the city centre with music and dance is on next weekend, as Homeground returns to bring you great live talent.
Homeground celebrates the very best Indigenous artists from Australia and around the world.

A weekend long festival experience, with music performances, dance stages, and an arts market. This year the event plans to be bigger and better bringing you lots of artists such as A Tribe Called Red, Getano Bann, Tibetan throat singer Tenzin Choegyal, fusion stars OKA, Pataphysics and the iconic Archie Roach, along with a rich and diverse dance program that includes eXcelsior, Jannawi Dancers, Koomurri, Malu Kiai Mura Buai Dance Troupe, Rako Dancers (Rotuma/Fiji) and Wagana Dancers.

While at the arts market you will meet Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artisans and makers from across Australia as you shop for artworks, home wares and bush foods.
There will also be lots of interesting workshops throughout the festival where you can learn some of the oldest techniques in the world.

For a weekend of culture sharing, great live talent, competitions and fun this is where it will be happening.

The music event for this week's community billboard is a gig for all of you who love the music of the legend that is Nat King Cole, as Dorian Mode will be performing a tribute show in one of our proud sponsor's venue.

This event will take you through Nat Cole’s rich life in story and song, with lots of laughs along the way. The talent on stage that will be taking you on a trip down memory lane will be Dorian Mode and his swinging trio.

Dorian Mode is both a multi-award winning musician and writer of laugh-out-loud books that have been bestsellers here and in Europe while Dorian’s last CD was awarded two ABC Music Awards. He has recorded with Bernie McGann, Mike Bukovsky and other luminaries for EMI and ABC Jazz. He has performed numerous concerts, jazz festivals and performed at the Sydney Opera House.

You are sure to be in for a night of entertaining stories about the jazz pianist with the soft baritone voice, Nat King Cole, while also enjoying the live swinging music with songs that conjure up late night moods through the upbeat funky grooves of Damion Mode and his trio's style.
