There is a huge range of ways to celebrate NAIDOC Week in Sydney! These are just a handful of events around us and is by no means an exhaustive list! Head to all the local Council websites for further info, as well as NAIDOC’s site here!

NAIDOC in the City

Enjoy live performances, participate in modern and traditional dance, try your hand at weaving, learn about traditional culture and enjoy a day in the park with your family and friends celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

NAIDOC Cup

Rugby-League-Sports-Nutrition-NRL-BallGet down and support your favourite team. The Annual NAIDOC cup is celebration of the history and achievement of two of the most prominent Urban Aboriginal communities in Australia. Kids’ games start at 10am with the A-Grade Men’s game between the Redfern All Blacks and the La Perouse Panthers kicking off at 2:45pm. There will be cultural activities, local visual artists, kids’ activities and entertainment all day. The event will be driven by Weave Youth Family Community (www.weave.org.au). NAIDOC Week 2013 Panel Discussion

This important panel discussion celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Yirrkala bark petitions, highlighting the achievements and important history of this event and recognising the work of its Aboriginal trailblazers. Featuring Wanyubi Marika – Wanyubi Marika is the son of Milirrpum Marika brother of Mawalan I, and Reverend Liyapadiny Marika of the Rirratjingu clan and one of the leading figures in the historic Gove Land Rights case. Aden Ridgeway – Aden Ridgeway was born in Macksville in northern NSW and is a proud member of the Gumbayyngirr people. Djon Mundine – Djon Mundine is a leading curator, writer and art historian. He has worked as Senior Curator, Gallery of Aboriginal Australia, National Museum of Australia, Canberra, Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and as Art Advisor for the Ramingining Community of Central Arnhem Land, NT for 16 years.

Glebe Family Fun Day

large_Glebe_20NAIDOCA day for families to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture in Glebe. Come and learn traditional toolmaking, participate in dance, music, art workshops. Loads of fun for everyone! We also have the Glebe Aboriginal history tour departing from this event. (Tour bookings essential)

The Ngala Nanga Mai pARenT Group

46671_listing_smallThe Ngala Nanga Mai pARenT Group, a project of the Department of Community Child Health at Sydney Children’s Hospital Network Randwick, is partnering with Jewish artists, led by Curator Estelle Rozinski, for an exhibition exploring artistic ideas, the diversity of life experiences, history and the cultural inheritance of these two communities. Whilst there are many shared experiences of trauma and discrimination, there are also many intersections of inherited wisdom and knowledge that warrant celebration.

Bush Tucker in Woollahra

bushtucker2Take your children and find out about Indigenous culture from ESORA expert John Lennis, who will lead a walk in and around Woollahra’s Cooper Park – hear about our local history, as well as what sort of bush tucker we have available in our own backyards! Meet at Cooper Park at 10.30am near the Café. Bring your sunhats, sunscreen, a water bottle and a notepad and paper for taking notes. A ‘bush tucker’ tasting treat will be provided for morning tea. This event is for kids aged 6-12 years. Bookings are essential and limited to 25 children.
