CONTEMPORARY ART – David Hockney and Kaldor Public Art Projects

Arts Thursday 25 July 2019

This week on Arts Thursday with Maisy Stapleton the focus is on contemporary art.

David Hockney prints are on exhibition at Hazlehurst Regional Gallery, as a touring exhibition from the National Gallery of Australia until 8 September.

The exhibition explores the artist’s experimentation with printmaking for over 60 years and shows developments in both technique and subject matter over this time – including his iconic swimming pool images and portraits of his friends.

The exhibition is taken from the Hockney print collection of the National Gallery of Australia, one of the largest in the world. Maisy Stapleton will be joined by David Greenhalgh, from the Gallery, to help us to explore the exhibition.

The second insight into contemporary art is the commemoration of 50 years of Kaldor Public Art Projects, which commenced in 1969 with the wrapping of Little Bay in Sydney by Christo and Jeanne-Claude and has continued over 34 projects to this date. The range of public projects has been extraordinary – from Gilbert and George singing Underneath the Arches at the Art Gallery of NSW in the 70s to Jonathon Green’s extraordinary barrangal dyara (skin and bones), a vast sculptural installation in the Royal Botanic Gardens which recalled the 19th century Garden Palace before it burnt to the ground along with countless Aboriginal objects collected along the colonial frontier.

Emily Sullivan, Project Coordinator with Kaldor Public Art Projects joins to talk about the history of the Kaldor Projects and the Living Archives Project which celebrates them.

Both interviews share themes, often found in contemporary art, such as the desire to democratise art and the continual pushing of boundaries through conceptualisation, subject matter and technique.
