Dave Bennett – Don’t Be That Way

Eastside Radios album of the week is Don’t Be That Way by Dave Bennett.

Born and raised in Michigan, USA, Dave Bennett has a wide array of musical influences that has shaped his style and some of them may shock you. As a jazz clarinet master, he has taken a keen interest in the works of swing magnate Benny Goodman and astounding rock n’ roller Roy Orbison as well as confessing he has been inspired by veterans such as Alice Cooper, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Chris Isaak throughout his career. It’s an odd mix for a man who also takes time away from the clarinet to exercise his vocal chords with a rockabilly vibe, shared between only himself and his piano.

There’s no doubting that Bennett is multi-talented, and this album proves it. Don’t Be That Way is a collection of some famous and some lesser known tracks from various periods in history, with audible ace taking tunes such as When The Saints Go Marching In, Sing Sing Sing, and The Beatles classic Yesterday and giving them a jazz twist like no other.

Not only is it tastefully done, but this album will give even the most tenacious devotees of the original tracks a new found appreciation for their favourites. His work with arranger Shelley Berger is an easy listening album, yet is full of surprises.
