Dial Afrika Tribute to Miriam Makeba

Tomorrow PJ on Dial Afrika has a special tribute to South African artist Miriam Makeba.

The first black woman to have a Top-Ten worldwide hit, with Pata Pata in 1967, Miriam Makeba has had an influence that is hard to match on music, fashion and politics. The South African government revoked her citizenship when she testified at the United Nations against apartheid. She won a Grammy for her performance with Harry Belafonte. In 1990, ANC leader Nelson Mandela was freed from 27 years in prison, and encouraged Miriam Makeba to return to South Africa. She then returned, after 31 years in exile, and became a goodwill ambassador for South Africa to the United Nations.

Miriam died in 2008, at the age of 76, still performing, still making a difference.

Makeba’s full biography is an inspiring read, and there are some wonderful pictures from throughout her career on Lipstick Alley.

Listen in for PJ’s very special show taking us on a tour of the life of this remarkable woman.
