Dig (Directions In Groove) – Clearlight
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Clearlight by Dig.
It’s over a decade since Dig’s last album but the Sydney group have returned with Clearlight, and it seems they haven’t forgotten their unique jazz/funk/electronica sound in their quiet period.
Dig have adopted the new sultry vocals from Laura Stitt, who you may know from Sydney funk band Uncle Jed, and her addition adds a further moody twist to their vibe. Indeed Clearlight adopts various guises, some tracks offer grooving funky beats however it’s on the instrumentals where you feel Dig truly indulge themselves as they delve into deeper and more sombre environments.
The whole project is smooth and slick, as you would expect from such a skin-tight set of groovers. Recorded in a range of styles, some tracks on the album are pure live takes and others underwent deep digitised production layering. In essence, Clearlight is as close as you will get to a modern Acid Jazz LP. Dig have taken their sound of old but moulded it and meshed it into something fresh and clean.
