Discover creative art by the sea
Believe it or not, this is actually the world’s largest annual free-to-the-public outdoor exhibition. How cool is that?
From this week there is one thing you as a Sydney-resident (or visitor) can`t miss. The annual event “Sculpture by the Sea” is now happening for the 18th time, and the art project is a great success every year.
The concept for Sculpture by the Sea was the culmination of many years thinking, where a new step in the thought process came up every year. “Essentially the exhibition came from my wish to create a major free to the public arts event for Sydney”, says David Handley, the Founding Director. After ten years of thinking and planning, Handley finally created a spectacular art experience along the 2km Bondi costal walk.
The founding Director has always been fascinated by large community arts events, especially the way total strangers sit next to each other listening to music or admiring art while enjoying a picnic dinner and a few glasses of wine. While running away from the corporate world and living in Prague in the early 1990’s, Handley was taken to an outdoor park in Bohemia where he got his first experience of the power and majesty of sculptures. “We think of sculptures as something large, ponderous and immovable”, says John McDonalds.
This year’s exhibition features over 100 works, 37 of them by first-time exhibitors. The sculptures are made by both Australian and overseas artists, and over 50 local, interstate and international artists participate in this exhibition every year.
Get ready to experience spectacular art with the lovely sight of nature in the background.
