At Your Door: Doormen of New York with Alina Gozin’a

On Arts Wednesday 29 November 2017, Sylvia’s guest was photographic artist, Alina Gozin’a. Alina is a Sydney girl, originally from Russia and lately living in New York. The doormen, a familiar sight outside Manhattan’s apartment blocks is the doorman,  recipient of residents’ secrets. Alina’s passion for portraiture, combined with her simpatico for these mostly Eastern European immigrants, is behind an extraordinary exhibition entitled At Your Door: Doormen of New York.

In Part 1 of the conversation, Alina talks about her own background, about doormen in general and about these particular doormen:

In Part 2 of the conversation, Alina talks about the format of the portraits, in particular the lace cravats thy wore for the shoot:

In Part 3 Alina talks about the small adjacent portraits of the same men in mufti and we ask: which is the real doorman? The conversation finishes on a philosophic note as Alina makes historical connections between these doormen in New York and the Russian Revolution of 1917.
