Edwina Blush – Sea For Cats

Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week is Sea For Cats by Edwina Blush.

Sea For Cats is the second album that Sydney vocalist Edwina Blush has co-written with pianist Leonie Cohen. The album features regular band members John Blenkhorn on guitar, Mark Howard on bass and Tim Bradley on drums plus the additional talents of Murray Jackson on saxophone, Gus Gomm on fluegel horn and trumpet and Jeremy Borthwick on Trombone.

The album is a light hearted and easy listening affair that has been beautifully crafted with all the tracks on the album original compositions. Sea For Cats is characterised by smooth jazz grooves, bossa nova rhythms and Blush’s sweet and lush vocals. Yet there is an added sense depth to the album as Blush ventures into moments of humour and eccentricity and also more emotional matters – something which separates the album from your average jazz vocalist release. Cheeky purrs, meows and naughty sexual euphemisms all add to the charm and fun of the album, yet there are also more serious and heart-moving moments such as the ballad to her recently deceased grandmother, and Blush’s address to African exploitation.

Sea For Cats is an album that can be appreciated by all, with its gentle and jovial approach matched by its creatively written lyrics and the strength of Blush’s backing band.
