Elixir Featuring Katie Noonan – First Seed Ripening
Eastside Radio’s album of the week is First Seed Ripening by Elixir featuring Katie Noonan.
Elixir and Katie Noonan are a closely knit group, saxophonist Zac Hurren is Noonan’s husband whilst guitarist Stephen Magnusson is a close friend. Add to the mix bassist Jonathan Zwartz, drummer Simon Barker, string players from the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Australian poet Thomas Shapcott to supply the lyrics and you have the recipe for something pretty special.
And special is what it is. However what you expect it is not. It’s been eight years since Elixir and Katie Noonan’s self titled debut, and in that time Noonan in particular has expanded her horizons performing on classical, pop and rock projects, most recently with The Captains and the album ‘Emperor’s Box.’ Noonan has absorbed influences from her blossoming external work and has transferred them into ‘First Seed Ripening.’ The album is a smooth and polished fusion of jazz, folk, classical and pop music. Whilst this may ruffle a few of the jazz heads feathers out there, there is no doubt in the abundant talent of this group, each artist bringing an individual style that blend superbly with one and other to create an overall harmony to the album.
‘First Seed Ripening’ is a soft and intimate work. Intelligent lyrics, beautiful vocals and intricate instrumentation lull the listener into a relaxed state of meditation. Elixir have created an album with a profound sense of connectivity, both with their harmonious connection with each other and their ability to convey to the listener.
You can catch Elixir and Katie Noonan on their album tour next week on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th September at the Sydney Opera House Studio. Follow this link for details www.sydneyoperhouse.com
