Fatoumata Diawara – Fatou

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Fatou by Fatoumata Diawara

Born in the Ivory Coast to Malian parents and now based in Paris, Fatoumata Diawara absorbs various African themes throughout her music, yet there are also hints of French gypsy and folk to it.

The songstress first chased a career in acting before becoming a songwriter and has since performed and recorded with AfroCubism, Oumou Sangaré, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Fatou has been released on the World Circuit record label, who are renowned for unearthing gems in world music including Vieux Farka Toure and The Buena Vista Social Club.

The album is a stunningly evocative, emotional and inspirational debut from Fatoumata. Her sultry, sensuous vocals and her afro folk backing band sweetly transport the listener to a serene African landscape. The album has a strong story telling theme throughout that is drenched deep in soul and thought. Not only has she impressed everyone with her first album, but she has affirmed herself as one of the top African singer songwriters of the moment.

Fatou is distributed by Fuse Music. For more information on Fatoumata Diawara and this LP go to their website at www.fusemusic.com.au
