Groove-laden beats with that classic jazz swing, this Sydney trio comprises James Loughan on saxophone, Abel Cross on bass and drummer Paul Derricott, and boy, do they know how to jam.

Having been well-educated in jazz through their studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, these guys have been able to use their knowledge to mesh together their passion for jazz, rock and experimental sounds. For them it’s all about the beauty within their compositions, using spontaneous structures and a level of improvisation to create music that speaks volumes about their uncanny abilities.

The layout of Pierrot is also something to be admired. From the very early stages, the opening track “Renaldo” boasts a significant rock influence. Paced drumming, constant saxophone and other persistent sounds of percussion flow through the next two tracks, with the third track “Pixelated Mosaic” solidifying itself as one of the highlights of the album. From then on these songs take a dive in the opposite direction, opting for a more subdued and melodious vibe. “Sphinx” and “Ash” mark the turning point, as the sparse drumming complements the focal point of James Loughan’s saxophone extravagance. Sailing smoothly through to track number eight, titled “Eighty-One”, its pulsating drum line and whispers of percussion make for a beautiful lead up to the closing track that is “Drendrophile”, an unabashedly dark composition that holds a menacing undertone beneath a more optimistic saxophonic line.

It’s a ride like no other, with elements to both excite and relax. A perfect fit for our feature album here at Eastside Radio.
