Film Launch – Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

This Wednesday The Standard in Sydney will host an unusually eye-opening and edgy event – the launch of controversial documentary film ‘Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’.

deepblue3

It is a 52 minute documentary that looks at the circumstances and impossible choices that lead people to become asylum seekers.

When she was 9, Zainab’s parents made the heartbreaking decision to leave their home in northern Afghanistan. They set out on a journey across the world, trusting their lives to complete strangers. The family chased freedom across borders, through prisons, and onto smugglers’ boats. ‘Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’ tells their story, and the stories of many more who have been forced down the same path.

The film crew travelled across Indonesia and met with 250 asylum seekers in jails, detention centres, and hostels. Through candid interviews, hidden camera footage and in the words of asylum seekers themselves, the story of the ‘refugee’ is told.

The doco is being screened in 30 major cities across the country to try and change the hearts and minds of Australians, and put pressure on our politicians to adopt a more compassionate approach to asylum seekers. The tour will conclude with a parliamentary screening at Parliament house on March 18. Everyone is encouraged to invite their local member of parliament to attend.

This is an over-18 event to share the real, first hand stories of asylum seekers with the broader Australian communities. Come and meet the human faces behind one of the most controversial issues of our time.
