For the local literati

Nominations close on Friday for “The Nib” Waverley Library Award for Literature 2014.Logo of Nib award

The Nib Award offers an annual winner’s prize of $20,000, six shortlisted prizes of $1,000 each, and a People’s Choice prize of $500.

The nominations are already rolling in, and showing a lively diversity of genres and topics. The works comprise non-fiction, fiction and children’s titles, from biographies to books on politics, urban planning, China, archaeology and, in the lead-up to the ANZAC centenary commemorative celebrations, many with a military theme. As always, the books are coming from around Australia by first-time, well-known and award-winning authors. Over the past 12 years, the Nib has developed its own distinctive character, rewarding a broad cross-section of deserving Australian authors. The Nib is the only national literary award to be developed and run by a local council and, although open to authors from all over Australia, it has close ties to our local community.

Since the award was created in 2002 it has offered the opportunity for book lovers in our region to participate in expanding the awareness and appreciation of Australia’s literary talent, and the valuing of a great read.

Online voting for the People’s Choice will commence after the announcement of the shortlist, expected in October, and the winners will be announced in December.
