FREEDMAN NEW JAZZ: Paths and Steams II – Matt McMahon
Acclaimed Pianist/composer Matt McMahon will premiere his new work Paths and Stream II on Saturday 17 October. The anticipated follow-up project to McMahon’s 2006 award-winning Freedman project, Paths and Streams II will this time feature McMahon’s own compositions which draw influences from a broad range of Australian composers. From Peggy Glanville-Hicks to Cold Chisel, traditional Irish music, indigenous Australian music, Arabic and jazz, this project draws together the various strands of Matt’s musical life. It is a personal examination of the unique landscape of Australia’s contemporary music culture.
To perform this highly anticipated new work, Matt has assembled an all-star ensemble featuring a Whos Who of Australian jazz:
Matt McMahon (piano) James Muller (guitar), Phil Slater (trumpet) Paul Cutlan (reeds) Michele O’Young (violin) Brendan Clarke (bass) and Simon Barker (percussion).
The combination of McMahon and Slater’s improvisational instincts, together with Muller’s boundless powers of invention and Barker’s dynamic, textural and dramatic kit work promises a spectacular setting for music making.
Presented by SIMA and support by the Freedman Foundation and Music Trust.
