Funk, Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Passion, Excitement and Enthusiasm: BrotherFunk Visit East Side

I arrived at the East Side studio cold, wet, extremely late and worried I’d just wasted the time of roots-fusion band BrotherFunk due to an unforeseen battle with gridlock traffic in a weirdly sporadic storm. Prepared to see some bored musicians sitting on a table, I burst into the office armed with big appologies and plans to launch straight in to it, when I heard some sweet beats and laughter coming from the studio.

Sure enough, behind the microphones were BrotherFunk members Keely, Eddie and Harry having an enthusiastic conversation with Maren while their tunes played in the background. Their time wasn’t being wasted, they didn’t mind that I was late and they certainly weren’t bored, in fact, I would go as far as to say they were having a pretty fantastic time.

Despite my frazzled um’s and uh’s, BrotherFunk were calm and collected doing what they do best: entertaining. They spoke with honesty, enthusiasm, excitement and passion about ongoing commitment to the music they love. The energy in the room was electric, wildly contagious and, above all, fun. They clearly love what they do and inject all their energies into dynamic and unforgettable live performances, gathering fans from the mountains and inner Sydney with catchy tunes on a self produced EP.

Starting out as a standard jazz covers band in 2009, BrotherFunk were inspired by local Australian bands such as Blue King Brown and have gone on to write an assortment of original songs, produce an EP and perform an array of gigs around Katoomba/inner Sydney, as well as managing a tour around the Byron Bay/Nimbin/Brisbane area in 2011 and a planing a second EP in 2013.

The remarkably talented seven piece band consists of:

Rachel Shead – vocals & sax
Eddie Boyd – guitar & vocals
Zach Manning – sax
Keely Tregillgas  – backing vocals  & sax
Shaun Weisbrodt – keys and bari sax
Harry Fuller – bass
Tim Symes – drums

See BrotherFunk perform:
– 14th September: Manning Bar (uni band comp)
– 12th October: Metro Lair (supporting The Trobes)
– 26th October: The Roxbury (jazz/blues night)
