Gabbi Lancaster to debut at m2 Gallery this October
This October, gallery m2 in Surry Hills will debut artist Gabbi Lancaster with her new exhibition entitled ‘Elemental’.
The exhibition is a celebration of everything that connects us to the natural world, with Gabbi endeavouring to have her audience feel the unity and the connection she has to physical landscapes and our inner dreamscapes.
Gabbi drew inspiration for this exhibition from the Booderee National Park in Jervis Bay (which is just over 3 hours away from Sydney travelling south). A lot of the inspiration and visions of how her work would progress came from this National Park.
The artist has described this exhibition as a celebration of her connection with Booderee National Park, using its natural beauty to influence how her art is created and how it flowed out onto the canvas.
Gabbi is a Sydney based artist, with her home in Maroubra serving as her art studio amongst a leafy garden and a collection of eucalyptus trees. She has been practicing the art of painting and drawing for the last 25 years and has been very active in the community to inspire those around her to unleash their inner creativity. Her earlier work focuses a lot on figurative drawing and portraiture and developed from there.
Her reputation as an art teacher coupled with her community spirit has made her a very busy artist. In 2004, her first art project was launched called ‘Pregnant Portraits’. As the name hints, the works are a collection of art celebrating the excitement of pregnancy.
Over the next ten years, Gabbi worked diligently developing and facilitating art and creative programs for children. She expressed a love of creativity and wanted to give children the opportunity to find their own creativity and enjoy art as much as she does.
One of the groups that were started as a result of her community work is the South Coogee Art Club that was formed in 2005. This club is an after school art program for primary school kids to enjoy art.
“I want to share and spread the positive effect that living creatively and expressively can have on all of us” she explained about her work. Recently, these programs were expanded to include adults as well with the formation of the group ‘Art in the Garden’.
The very latest project Gabbi has been working on is a social media campaign called #moon2mooncreative. It is a 28 day cycle of creative prompts and ideas shared on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. During this time Gabbi invites us to discuss art and peoples creative process freely online to encourage fellow artists.
Gabbi is an inspiration for the art community for her hard work and dedication to her art. This exhibition is not one to miss!
