“Gaybies” at Eternity Playhouse

A new play dealing with the experiences of children raised by same sex parents is just about to open at the Darlinghurst Theatre Company to coincide with the 2015 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras week.

The play, amusingly called Gaybies, is written and directed by Helpmann award-winning director Dean Bryant. The play tells the story of a group of children who have grown up in a “rainbow family”.

The basis of the show is series of interviews that were collected from children and adults aged 4 to 40, who have all had the experience of growing up with same sex parents, surrogate mums and donor dads. They ask the question “But what about the children?” of exactly the people who can answer from their own lives. Because, of course, while outsiders argue about what makes an acceptable family, all kinds of families have been quietly getting on with their own way of doing things for years.

The authentic accounts from these kids, and those who have grown to adulthood, allow the play to talk about unconventional family life in a humorous way that also keeps things honest.

“It’s sincere, touching, hilarious and heart-breaking,” director Dean Bryant commented. As well as being new Australian work, this is a real labour of love for the Darlinghurst theatre, and the families who participated in creating it.

The play is set to hit the stage this February.
