The traditional Easter Bonnet, the country cockies’ hats at the Easter Show and fashions for the racing carnival, focus our attention at this time on hats!

From turbans to toques, helmets to protective hairnets, headdress has been important for protection and practicality, cultural identity, style and fashion.

On Arts Thursday, 9 April 2014, join Maisy Stapleton as she explores our wearing of hats today.

From 10:30 onward, listen to Milliner Catherine Kelly from Embellish Atelier, Historian Prudence Black from the University of Sydney and Roy Wilkinson from Akubra, talk about the design, making and some recent history of the hat in Australia, as well as the iconic Akubra.

And there’s much music devoted to the hat –  interspersed between these fascinating interviews.

Join Maisy Stapleton on Arts Thursday every fortnight, for insightful interviews and inspirational music.
